Aztecs Women's Basketball Win Streak Snapped at Phoenix College

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (17-4, 11-2 in ACCAC) could not get in any kind of rhythm on Saturday as it trailed the entire game at Phoenix College (10-11, 6-7).

The No. 7 ranked Aztecs fell 69-50 as their 11-game winning streak came to a halt. This was Pima's first loss to an ACCAC Division II team this season and their first loss since Dec. 5 at Eastern Arizona College.

Pima scored just six points the first quarter but started the second quarter with a 6-0 run to cut it to 19-12. Down 22-15, the Bears went on a 9-0 run to make it 31-15. The Aztecs trailed 37-23 at halftime and could not escape the double digit deficit in the second half. The closest Pima got in the second half was 13 points and they trailed by as much as 21 points.

The Aztecs went 1 for 12 from three-point range and 11 for 23 from the free throw line. They shot 28 percent from the field for the game.

Sophomore Shalise Fernander (Flowing Wells HS) was one of the bright spots for the Aztecs as she posted a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds while freshman Sydni Stallworth (Palo Verde HS) also finished with 14 points.

The Aztecs and the Bears split the regular season head-to-head match-ups. The Aztecs won 61-46 at the West Campus gym in November.

The Aztecs look to rebound on Wednesday as they play their third straight game on the road at Tohono O'Odham Community College in Sells. The game starts at 5:30 p.m.
