Aztec Women's Basketball falter in Fourth Quarter, Fall to New Mexico JC

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (1-1) kept it close against No. 3 ranked New Mexico Junior College (Division I) but couldn't catch up in the fourth quarter on Friday in the second day of the NMJC Thunderbird Classic.

The No. 1 ranked Aztecs (Division II) were outscored 23-5 in the final period as they lost 79-54.

The Aztecs trailed for much of the game but tied it after sophomore Sydni Stallworth (Palo Verde HS) hit a three-pointer to make it 39-39. Later in the quarter, freshman Katey Roquemore hit a three-ball to give the Aztecs their first lead at 43-42 with 3:34 left. The Thunderbirds followed up with a 10-2 run in less than two minutes to reclaim the lead at 52-45. The Aztecs trailed 56-49 heading into the fourth quarter.

Stallworth scored a team-high 12 points on 5 for 11 shooting. She also had two rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Bree Cates finished with 10 points and five rebounds while Roquemore came off the bench and contributed with nine points, going 3 for 6 from three-point range. Sophomore Moana Hala'ufia (Marana HS) had eight points, five rebounds and three blocks.

The Aztecs struggled from the three-point line going 6 for 28 for the game. They were also out-rebounded 44-34.

The Aztecs close out play in the NMJC Thunderbird Classic on Saturday when they play Howard College (TX) at 11:00 a.m.
