Aztec Women's Basketball Use Fourth Quarter Run to Down Howard College; Holthaus Wins No. 199

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (2-1) closed out play in the NMJC Thunderbird Classic on Saturday and finished the invitational with a 2-1 record against Division I teams.

The No. 1 ranked (Division II) Aztecs used a fourth quarter run to break away and beat Howard College (TX) 62-56.

The Aztecs trailed 49-46 with 7:50 left in the game but went on a 13-0 run in six minutes to take a double digit lead at 59-49 with 1:50 remaining.

Pima trailed 32-27 at halftime but opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 34-32 advantage. Later in the quarter, with the score knotted at 37-37, the Aztecs used another 7-0 run to take the lead back at 44-37. Pima finished the third quarter outscoring the Hawks 17-7.

Sophomore Sydni Stallworth (Palo Verde HS) scored a team-high 16 points while fellow sophomore Denesia Smith (Cienega HS) finished with nine points, five rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Erin Peterson (Catalina Foothills HS) had eight points and three rebounds.

Todd Holthaus won his 199th game as the Pima women's basketball head coach.

"I'm proud of this weekend. The ladies came to New Mexico and went 2-1 vs. Division I teams. There's lots of work to do but we are off to a great start," Pima coach Todd Holthaus said.

The Aztecs are off until Thursday, Nov. 17 when they play their home opener as part of the Tohono O'odham Community College Native American Classic. They'll face off against Gillette College (WY) at 8:00 p.m.
