Spruit nets 17 off the bench as women's basketball dominates

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (4-1) used a dominant second quarter for the second straight night to pull away on Friday in the second day of the Tohono O'odham Community College Native American Classic.

The No. 1 ranked Aztecs defeated Elite 1 Academy 90-36. The Aztecs used a 10-0 run in the first quarter to take a double digit lead and a 13-0 run in the second quarter as they took a 48-18 advantage at halftime.

The Aztecs held the Wings scoreless for almost 14-and a half minutes between the second and third quarters.

The Aztecs' bench came through as they scored 56 points and was led by freshman Izzy Spruit (Mesquite HS), who drained five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points. Fellow freshman Reazsha Benjamin (Sahuaro HS) also scored in double figures off the bench with 10 points. Sophomore Sydni Stallworth (Palo Verde HS) had 16 points, five assists and four steals in the game.

The Aztecs will close out their portion of the Native American Classic on Saturday. They will play No. 11 ranked Illinois Central College in a rematch of the NJCAA Division II national tournament semifinal game. The Aztecs lost that game 77-74. Tip-off is scheduled at 2:00 p.m.
