Stallworth dominates second half as women's basketball beats Phoenix College

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (12-3, 6-2 in ACCAC) responded to put one back in the win column on Wednesday against Phoenix College (6-9, 3-5).

The No. 2 ranked Aztecs defeated the Bears 94-71 at the West Campus gymnasium.

Sophomore Sydni Stallworth (Palo Verde HS) took over the second half. Up 65-57, she scored the next nine points to help them regain a double digit lead. The Aztecs took a 75-65 lead and went on a 13-2 run to take an 88-67 lead forcing the Bears to call timeout with 2:30 left in the game.

The Aztecs opened the game with a 14-0 run as their defense forced the Bears to miss their first 12 shots. Phoenix College scored their first points at the 3:24 mark in the first quarter. The Bears went on a 10-0 in the second quarter to cut Pima's lead to 23-21 but the Aztecs fired back with a 12-0 run of their own to make it 35-21. The Aztecs led 47-28 at halftime.

Stallworth scored 18 of her 26 points in the second half. She went 8 for 15 from the floor, including 4 for 7 from three-point range. She also had six assists and three steals.

Sophomore Bree Cates finished with 20 points while fellow sophomore Denesia Smith (Cienega HS) had 12 points, three assists and two steals.

The Aztecs will be back on the road on Saturday at Central Arizona College. The game will start at 2:00 p.m.
