Sophomores take over as women's basketball earns win at Central Arizona College

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (13-3, 7-2 in ACCAC) made it two in a row at Central Arizona College (11-5, 6-3) on Saturday.
The No. 2 ranked Aztecs (Division II) defeated the Vaqueras (Division I) 96-85. The Aztecs earned their first win at Central Arizona last season since 1982. This was coach Todd Holthaus' second win in Coolidge since he became coach 10 years ago.
The Aztecs took a 47-45 lead at halftime and outscored the Vaqueras 29-20 in the third quarter.
The sophomores took over the game led by Sydni Stallworth (Palo Verde HS), who finished with a team-high 34 points along with four assists and five rebounds. Fellow sophomore Denesia Smith (Cienega HS) had 17 points, six rebounds and four steals while sophomore Bree Cates also finished with 17 points. Sophomore Erin Peterson (Catalina Foothills HS) contributed with 10 points and eight rebounds.
"Amazing team win and I'm super proud," Pima coach Todd Holthaus said.
The Aztecs will face another tough task on Wednesday as they host rival Mesa Community College at 5:30 p.m. It will be the first time the Aztecs and the Thunderbirds will play since the Region I, Division II championship game where the Aztecs won 78-54.
