Jones Nets a Pair of Goals as Women's Soccer Holds Off Phoenix College

The Pima Community College women's soccer team (2-1, 2-1 in ACCAC) took hold of a two-goal advantage in the first half and held off a Phoenix College comeback on Tuesday at the Kino North Grandstand.

The No. 9 ranked Aztecs defeated the Bears 3-1.

Up 2-0 after the first half, the Aztecs saw their lead cut to one goal after Andrea Cerda scored for the Bears (1-2, 1-2) in the 78th minute to make it 2-1. In the 84th minute, freshman Alexis Hernandez ((Ironwood Ridge HS) was fouled inside the penalty area. Sophomore Destiny Jones (Canyon del Oro HS) scored the penalty shot to help seal it.

Jones scored her first goal in the 41st minute to give the Aztecs their first two-goal lead. Freshman Taylor Inocencio (St. Augustine Catholic HS) had the assist. Sophomore Shania Pablo put the Aztecs on the board in the 31st minute with an assist from Hernandez.

The Aztecs outshot the Bears 13-5 and sophomore goalkeeper Daniela Sanchez (Sabino HS) finished the game with four saves.

The Aztecs will play at Cochise College on Saturday in Douglas at 1:00 p.m.
