Aztecs Women's Soccer falls to Phoenix College in Region I Finals

The Pima Community College women's soccer team played in its fourth straight NJCAA Region I, Division II Finals match on Saturday.

• The No. 3 seeded Aztecs fell to No. 1 Phoenix College 3-1. This was the second straight year Pima has lost at Phoenix College in the finals.
• The Aztecs struggled to generate offense in the first half as the Bears got on the board in the 11^th minute with a goal from Justyce Smith. They took advantage of a foul inside the box and Chloe Corral scored on a penalty kick in the 41^st minute. The Aztecs trailed 2-0 at halftime.
• The Aztecs made it interesting and cut it to a one-goal deficit when sophomore Kyleigh Oliver (Salpointe Catholic HS) converted on her shot in the 49^th minute to make it 2-1.
• The Bears responded five minutes later when Ariany Mapula scored in the 54^th minute.
• The Aztecs were held to one shot on goal in the first half and finished with three for the game. The Aztecs had an opportunity when Oliver fed a pass to freshman Lizzie Walker inside the box, but her attempt was halted by Phoenix goalkeeper Morgan Trail to preserve their lead.
• Sophomore Adriana Pacheco finished the game with seven saves; she made six in the first half as the Aztecs held the Bears to two shots on goal in the second half.

The Aztecs are now 8-7-2 overall and await to see if they receive an at-large bid for the NJCAA Division II National Tournament held from Nov. 12-18 at Kino North Sports Complex.
