Aztecs women's tennis goes undefeated at home after topping Paradise Valley CC

The Pima Community College women's tennis team (7-1) closed out the regular season with a shutout win on Tuesday over Paradise Valley Community College.

The No. 17 ranked Aztecs won 9-0 and finished the season undefeated at the West Campus Tennis Courts.

Sophomore Emma Oropeza (Nogales HS) rallied from being down 3-4 in the second set to beat Kelly Slattery 7-6, 6-4 in her No. 1 singles match. Fellow sophomore Janine Fernando (Sabino HS) also rallied in her second set with four straight points to beat Cheyanna Anderson 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. The No. 1 doubles duo of Oropeza and Fernando defeated Slattery and Baylee Decker 8-2.

Freshman Meghan Houk (Corona del Sol HS) won her No. 3 singles match over Decker 6-1, 6-1 while sophomore Lien Nguyen picked up a shutout victory at No. 4 singles over Ali Ambriz 6-0, 6-0. Houk and Nguyen blanked Anderson and Calli Chance 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Freshman Ashley Fitzsimmons (Walden Grove HS) won her No. 5 singles match beating Chance 6-1, 6-1 and sophomore Jayme Shafer (Tucson HS) made quick work of Leah Bookfinder at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-0. Fitzsimmons and Shafer downed Ambriz and Bookfinder at No. 3 doubles 8-1.

The Aztecs will compete at the Region I Championships on Tuesday and Wednesday, Apr. 24-25 at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale. Competition begins at 8:00 a.m. on both days.
