Morgan Pepe secures region crown in the Pole Vault at Region I Championships
The Pima Community College women's track & field team competed in the first day of the Region I Championships on Tuesday at Mesa Community College.
- The Aztecs sit in third place with a total of 73 points. Central Arizona College is currently in first place with 95 and Mesa Community College is in second place with 81 points.
- Freshman Morgan Pepe (Ironwood Ridge HS) captured the Region I title in the Pole Vault as she cleared a new personal-record of 3.72 meters (12-feet, 2.50-inches) on her first attempt. She is No. 3 in Pima school history in the event.
- Freshman Maylee Thompson (Willcox HS) secured 16 team points on the day. She took third place in the Long Jump at 5.65 meters (18-6.50), claimed fourth place in the Javelin with a mark of 36.39 meters (119-4) and was fourth in the Pole Vault with a personal-best mark of 2.52 meters (8-3.25).
- Sophomore Annika Arvayo (Salpointe Catholic HS) took third in the Hammer throw with a mark of 44.22 meters (145-1) while freshman Brianne Roberts finished third in the Pole Vault at 3.27 meters (10-8.75). They each earned six points in their respected events.
Other Pima finishes that scored points:
- Mariah Cruz, Alyssa Perez, Linda Rivero, Reatta Danhof – Fourth place in 4x800 relay 10:28.39 (5 points)
- Kapualani Magnani (Empire HS) – Fifth place in Hammer throw 40.68 meters (133-5) (4 points)
- Jenyce Lopez (Canyon del Oro HS) – Sixth place in Javelin 32.39 meters (106-3) (3 points); Sixth place in Hammer throw 39.20 meters (128-7) (3 points).
- April Necaise – Seventh place in Javelin 31.48 meters (103-3) (2 points); Eighth in Long Jump 5.15 meters (16-10.75) (1 point).
The Aztecs close out competition at the Region I Championships on Thursday. Events begin by 3:00 p.m. at Mesa Community College.
