Aztecs Volleyball Rally Falls Short Against Benedictine University

The Pima Community College volleyball team (4-4) fell behind but managed to rally to make things interesting against Benedictine University on Wednesday in a non-conference match.

The Aztecs won the third set but couldn't close the gap in the fourth set as they lost in four games 25-14, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21.

The Aztecs lost eight straight points in the first set and got as close as three points in the second set but dropped both to fall behind 2-0.

In the third set, the Aztecs fell behind again early. Down 15-13, they rallied off nine straight points to take a 22-15 lead. They were able to hold off a late Benedictine University rally to win the game.

In the fourth set, Pima took the lead early at 6-3 but Benedictine University rallied off six straight points to take the lead for good. The Aztecs closed to gap to one point on seven occasions but couldn't overtake the lead.

Sophomore Brooklyn Scarborough (Thatcher HS) finished the match with seven kills while freshman Kristin Baldwin (Thatcher HS) had five kills and four blocks. Sophomore Miranda Bingham (Safford HS) had 24 assists and fellow sophomore Angel Chavez (Mingus Union HS) (pictured) finished the match with 21 digs and two aces.

The Aztecs will compete in the Scottsdale CC Classic Tournament on Friday and Saturday. They will play three matches on Friday; Central Wyoming College at 8:30 a.m., Utah State University at 12:30 p.m. and Spokane Falls Community College (WA) at 4:30 p.m.
