Aztecs Volleyball Fall Short of Upsetting (6) Scottsdale CC

The Pima Community College volleyball team (8-6, 2-2 in ACCAC) had the advantage in its match against Scottsdale Community College on Wednesday but couldn't put them away. The Aztecs lost to No. 6 ranked Scottsdale in five games 23-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-12, 15-10.

In the fifth set tie-breaker, Scottsdale took the lead at 8-4 but the Aztecs scored four straight set points to tie it up at 8-8. Scottsdale won seven of the final nine points to end the match.

The first three sets of the match were as close as it could get. The Aztecs took the early advantage with the win in the first set as they led by three points on six different occasions. Scottsdale led the entire second game but the Aztecs closed the gap to 24-23 before dropping the final point.

In the third set, the Aztecs trailed 21-18 but took the lead after a block points by freshman Kristin Baldwin (Thatcher HS), a kill by sophomore Brooklyn Scarborough (Thatcher HS) and an ace by sophomore Miranda Bingham (Safford HS). The Aztecs took the lead at 22-21 at that point. Jamie Holliday (Sahuaro HS) put down the final kill to give the Aztecs the advantage again. Pima fell behind early in the fourth set and couldn't recover.

Holliday finished the match with 16 kills and 15 digs while Baldwin had 10 kills and six blocks. Bingham had 50 assists and 17 digs and sophomore Angel Chavez (Mingus Unions HS) had 30 digs. Arisa Chavez (pictured) posted six kills and 14 digs.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus gym on Friday when they host Glendale Community College at 7:00 p.m.
