Aztecs Volleyball Fall Against South Mountain CC

The Pima Community College volleyball team (14-10, 4-5 in ACCAC) took an early advantage in its match on Friday against South Mountain Community College but the Aztecs fell in the end at the West Campus gym.

Pima won the first set but dropped the next three falling in four sets (23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22). The Aztecs came into the match winning six of their last seven matches.

Sophomore Arisa Chavez put down the final kill to seal the win in the first set for the Aztecs. In the second set, the Aztecs fell behind 20-13 and closed the gap by four points on two occasions but didn't get any closer.

In the third set, they trailed 24-16 but two aces by sophomore Miranda Bingham (Safford HS) and a kill by freshman Victoria Davis (Sahuaro HS) cut it to 24-21 but South Mountain secured the final set point. The Aztecs trailed the entire fourth set but closed South Mountain's lead to just one point on seven occasions but couldn't overtake them.

Freshman Kristin Baldwin (Thatcher HS) finished the match with 13 kills, three blocks and two aces while sophomore Mariah Rodriguez (Tucson Magnet HS) had eight blocks and four kills. Bingham had 41 assists, 15 digs and three aces. Sophomore Angel Chavez (Mingus Union HS) contributed with 18 digs.

The Aztecs will play their next three matches on the road. They'll play at Phoenix College on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
