Aztecs Volleyball Fall Against Glendale in Region Tourney Opener

The Pima Community College volleyball team (17-15) dropped its opening match of the Region I, Division II tournament on Thursday at Glendale Community College.

The No. 4 seeded Aztecs fell to the host school, No. 1 seed Glendale in straight sets 25-19, 25-17, 25-20. The Aztecs will play in an elimination match against No. 3 South Mountain Community College at 11:00 a.m.

The Aztecs trailed for almost the entire first set but cut Glendale's lead to one point on two occasions but couldn't tie or overtake the lead.

The second set went back and forth as the Aztecs took an 11-10 lead but Glendale scored three straight points to take the lead back. With Pima down 20-17, Glendale secured the final five set points to put the Aztecs down 2-0 in the match.

In the third set, the Aztecs fell behind 11-8 and Glendale rallied off six straight points to lead 17-8. Later in the set, they went up 21-11. The Aztecs rallied off five straight set points of their own and cut the Glendale lead four points on two occasions at 22-18 and 23-19 but Glendale closed it out in the end.

Sophomores Brooklyn Scarborough (Thatcher HS) and Jamie Holliday (Sahuaro HS) each had eight kills. Holliday also had two aces. Sophomore Miranda Bingham (Safford HS) had 22 assists and two aces while sophomore Angel Chavez (Mingus Union HS) had 21 digs.

The Aztecs will play No. 3 South Mountain Community College in an elimination match tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. at Glendale Community College.
