Aztecs Volleyball locks up No. 3 for Region I Playoffs after beating Glendale CC in tiebreaker

The Pima Community College volleyball team (12-16, 8-8 in ACCAC) closed out the regular season on Friday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium against Glendale Community College (10-9, 8-8).

  • The Aztecs rallied after dropping the first set and overcoming the Gauchos tying the match to force a final set. The Aztecs won the tie breaker and beat the Gauchos 3-2 (17-25, 25-22, 26-24, 18-25, 15-8).
  • The Aztecs dominated the tiebreaker scoring the first nine of 10 points to begin the final set.
  • Sophomore Abby Whatton (Canyon del Oro HS) finished the match with a team-high 24 kills.
  • Freshman Kenna Simon also finished in double figures with 14 kills. Freshman Haylee Gilleland (Flagstaff HS) closed out the match with eight kills.
  • Freshman Taylor Crawford (Ironwood Ridge HS) posted 50 assists.
  • This was Pima's first win over Glendale Community College since Nov. 7, 2019. The Aztecs had lost in straight sets to the Gauchos in their last six meetings.

The Aztecs will be the No. 3 seed in the NJCAA Region I, Division II Tournament from Nov. 2-4. All matches for the double elimination tournament will be held at No. 1 overall seed Scottsdale Community College. The Aztecs will start off against No. 2 Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
