Aztecs men's team finish 6th, women take 11th at NJCAA Nationals

The Pima Community College men's and women's cross country teams competed in the NJCAA National Championships on Saturday at South Plain College in Lubbock, TX.

The men's team took sixth place out of 33 teams with a team score of 243 points. Central Arizona was the only other ACCAC team to have a better finish as they placed second with 68 points. This was the best finish for the Aztecs since 2004 when they placed fourth at the national tournament.

The Aztecs placed their top five runners in the top 60 in a field of 256 competitors. Ahmed Mohamed (Rincon HS) was the top finisher for the Aztecs as he took 42nd place in the 4.97-mile race with a time of 26 minutes, 31 seconds. Anthony Spendlove (Flagstaff HS) took 49th with time of 26:41 and Estevan Gomez (Tucson Magnet HS) finished right behind him in 50th with a time of 26:41. Mark Bennett (Marana HS) finished the race in 52nd as he crossed the finish line at 26:42 while Amanuel Logo (Catalina Magnet HS) rounded out the top five in 60th with a time of 26:53.

In the women's 3.1-mile race the Aztecs finished in 11th place out of 36 teams with a team score of 355 points. Central Arizona took second place with 110 points and Paradise Valley Community College placed eighth with 277 points. Shanice Alchesay (Alchesay HS) was the top finisher for the Aztecs as she placed 23rd out of 274 competitors with a time of 18:44.51. Mariah Zavala (Amphitheater HS) took 70th with a time of 19:50.06 while Elizabeth Deaton (Cienega HS) placed 101st at 20:15.79. Sarrah Boughan (Canyon del Oro HS) took 106th with a time of 20:17.52 and Raelene Yocupicio (Rio Rico HS) placed 129th after crossing the line at 20:35.97.
