PCC men's cross country take second place at Region I Championships

The Pima Community College men's and women's cross country teams competed in the NJCAA Region I Championships at Skunk Creek Linear Park in Glendale on Monday.

The men's team took second place in the team standings with a team score of 72 points. This was its best finish at the region championships since 2003. Central Arizona College took first with 15 points. The Aztecs beat Paradise Valley Community College (75), Mesa Community College (86), Glendale Community College (96) and Estrella Mountain Community College (174).

Mark Bennett (Marana HS) was the top finisher for the Aztecs in eighth place out of 40 runners with a time of 26 minutes, 44.3 seconds. He earned Second Team All-Region. Amanuel Logo (Catalina Magnet HS) also earned Second Team All-Region after he took 10th place with a time of 26:57. Estevan Gomez (Tucson Magnet HS) finished 14th with a time of 27:08.4 as he was awarded All-Region Honorable Mention. Cruz Rodriguez (Empire HS) took 19th place at 27:30.7 and Anthony Spendlove (Flagstaff HS) rounded out the top five with a 21st place finish at 28:03.8.

The women's team finished in third place with a team score of 67 points. Central Arizona College took first with a team score of 24 and Paradise Valley finished in second place at 46. Pima beat Mesa (85), Glendale (142) and Estrella Mountain (167).

Shanice Alchesay (Alchesay HS) was the top finisher for the Aztecs as she placed seventh out of 38 competitors with a time of 19:47.6 which earned her Second-Team All-Region. Mariah Zavala (Amphitheater HS) was the next Pima finisher as she took 13th with a time of 20:36.9. Zavala's finish made her All-Region Honorable Mention. Sarrah Boughan (Canyon del Oro HS) also earned honorable mention as she took 14th at 20:46.1. Desire Montenegro (Sunnyside HS) finished 16th with a time of 20:54.7 and Elizabeth Deaton (Cienega HS) rounded out the top five finishers with a 17th place finish at 20:56.3.

The Aztecs will compete in the NJCAA National Cross Country Championships on Nov. 8 in Lubbock, TX hosted by South Plains College. The women's race will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the men's race will follow at 10:45 a.m.
