Bennett and Logo Finish in Top 5 in Open Division at George Kyte Classic

The Pima Community College men's and women's cross country teams competed in their first meet of the season on Saturday at the George Kyte Invitational at Buffalo Park in Flagstaff.

In the men's 4.5-mile race, the Aztecs took second place in the Open Division with a score of 53 points. Sophomore Mark Bennett (Marana HS) finished in 11th place overall out of 104 runners and first place in the Open Division with a time of 23 minutes, 43.3 seconds. Fellow sophomore Amanuel Logo (Catalina HS) (pictured) crossed the finish-line 29th overall and fourth in the Open Division at 24:26.4.

Freshman Anas Ali (Catalina HS) took 56th place with a time of 25:51.1 while freshman Armando Antonio Jr. (Desert View HS) placed 51st at 25:55.2. Sophomore Ahmed Mohamed (Rincon HS) took 64th with a time of 26:43.4.

In the women's 2.6-mile race, the Aztecs placed 3rd in the Open Division with a total of 68 points. Freshman Katy Loyd (Catalina HS) was the top finisher as she took 43rd place out of 76 runners with a time of 17:45.4. Sophomore Elizabeth Deaton (Cienega HS) took 44th place with a time of 17:52.8 while sophomore Desire Montenegro (Sunnyside HS) placed 49th at 18:09.3.

Freshman Samantha Felzien took 51st place with a time of 18:19.8 and sophomore Mariah Zavala was 55th at 18:33.4.

The Aztecs will compete in the Dave Murray Invitational on Friday, Sept. 18 at the Dell Urich Golf Course. The men's race will be at 5:00 p.m. and the women's race will follow at 5:45 p.m.
