Avalos gains two wins but Aztecs men's tennis falls vs. Paradise Valley CC

The Pima Community College men's tennis team (2-2, 1-2 in ACCAC) played in some tough matches against Paradise Valley Community College on Thursday at the West Campus Tennis Courts.

The Aztecs fell to the Pumas 6-3.

Sophomore Avalos (Sunnyside HS) won his singles and doubles matches. Avalos, along with sophomore Francisco Ton (Nogales HS) won their No. 1 doubles match in a tie-breaker against Nick Marroquin and Freddy Henry 9-8 (7-2). Avalos followed that by beating Marroquin at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-1.

Sophomore Raj Singh Kaila (Yuma HS) was the other Aztec player to gain a win as he defeated Chris Malayan 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

Ton dropped his No. 2 singles match against Henry in a second set tie-breaker 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Freshman Francisco Sotelo (Cholla HS) played a three-set match at No. 4 singles gaining the win in the first set but falling in the next two as he lost to Tim Schlum 0-6, 6-3, 7-6.

Sophomore Dalton Reisig (Catalina Foothills HS) played two tightly contested sets but fell to Brian Tuncap 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Jesus Lopez (Canyon del Oro HS) lost at No. 5 singles to Victor Tuncap 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles competition, Reisig and Sotelo fell in a tie-breaking set to Brian and Victor Tuncap 9-8 (7-4) while Lopez and Singh Kaila dropped their No. 3 doubles match to Schlum and Malayan 8-4.

The Aztecs begin the second half of the season on Wednesday when they play at Mesa Community College. The match begins at 11:00 a.m.
