Aztecs men's escape with a win at Paradise Valley

The Pima Community College men's tennis team (4-3, 3-3 in ACCAC) closed out the regular season in Phoenix on Tuesday.

The Aztecs won a tight match-up as they beat Paradise Valley Community College 5-4.

The Aztecs took two of the three doubles matches. Sophomores Jesus Lopez (Canyon del Oro HS) and Raj Singh Kaila (Yuma HS) won a tie-breaking set 9-8 (7-3) over Tim Schlum and Chris Malayan at No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Dalton Reisig (Catalina Foothills HS) and freshman Francisco Sotelo (Cholla HS) won a close match at No. 2 doubles as they beat Brian Tuncap and Victor Tuncap 8-6.

Sophomore No. 1 doubles team Marc Avalos (Sunnyside HS) and Francisco Ton (Nogales HS) lost to Nicholas Marroquin and Freddy Henry 8-5.

Sotelo earned a huge win at No. 4 singles. He won a tie-breaker in the first set and went on to beat Schlum 7-6 (8-6), 7-5. Avalos also played a tight first set but was able to pick up the win at No. 1 singles over Marroquin 7-5, 6-3. Singh Kaila earned the other singles win for the Aztecs as he beat Malayan 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

Ton played a close match at No.2 singles but fell in three sets to Henry 6-7, 6-1, 7-5. Reisig fell at No. 3 singles to Brian Tuncap 6-3, 6-3 while Lopez lost to Victor Tuncap 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

The Aztecs will compete in the NJCAA Region I Championships on Tuesday and Wednesday, Apr. 18-19 at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale. Competition begins at 8:00 a.m.
