Nunez and Rivera homer as No. 15 Softball scores 36 runs to sweep Paradise Valley CC

The Pima Community College softball team (10-0, 6-0 in ACCAC) dominated its ACCAC conference doubleheader against Paradise Valley Community College (1-5, 1-5) on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field.
Freshman Jiselle Nunez (Tucson Magnet HS) produced a flawless first game while sophomore Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS) went 4 for 5 with four RBIs and four runs scored in the two games played. Freshman Julissa Lopez (Tucson Magnet HS) was 4 for 6 with an RBI and five runs scored on the day. Freshman Arianna Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) continued her strong start in the circle and sophomore Yanelyssia Chavez (Salpointe Catholic HS) got her first win of the season.

  • Game 1: (15) Pima CC Aztecs 17, Paradise Valley CC Pumas 5 (5 innings): The Aztecs scored 13 runs in the 3rd inning to help secure their first run rule victory.
    Nunez had two at-bats in the inning as she got the barrage going with an RBI double to score sophomore Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS) to make it 2-0. Her big impact came later in the inning as she drove a 2-0 count out towards left field for a grand slam. She scored freshman Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS), sophomore Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) and Marx to make it 12-0.
    Sophomore Cheyanne Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a two-run RBI double in the inning scoring Rivera and Lopez. Sophomore Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo HS), Lopez, freshman Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside HS) and freshman Belen Camacho (Pueblo HS) all had RBI hits in the inning.
    Camacho had a two-run RBI double in the 4th inning as the Aztecs tacked on another three runs.
    Nunez finished 4 for 4 with five RBIs and three runs scored while Camacho was 2 for 2 with three RBIs. Noriega went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs. Ortiz closed out the game going 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a run while Rivera went 2 for 3 with two runs. Lopez was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run.
    Flores picked up her fourth win of the season as she pitched four innings, giving up one hit with nine strikeouts and two walks on 71 pitches.

  • Game 2: (15) Pima CC Aztecs 19, Paradise Valley CC Pumas 2 (5 innings): The Aztecs scored another double-digit run total in one frame as they put up 14 runs in the 4th inning to help secure another run-rule win.
    Rivera got it started with a two-run home run to bring in freshman Taiya Teixeira (Salpointe Catholic HS) as Pima went up 7-0. Rivera had a two-run RBI double later in the inning bringing around sophomore Nevaeh Bracamonte and freshman Legend Otero, who got on base after driving in two runs with an RBI single. Sophomore Mari Asher (Canyon del Oro HS) had a two-run RBI double scoring Camacho and Lopez to make it 17-0.
    Rivera closed it out by going 2 for 2 with four RBIs while Lopez finished 3 for 4 with four runs and Asher went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Ortiz was 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Camacho finished 1 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Otero went 1 for 1 with two RBIs and a run and Teixeira drew two walks and scored two runs.
    Chavez got her first win of the season after she pitched five innings, giving up two runs (two earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Softball Field for their third straight ACCAC conference doubleheader as they face off against South Mountain Community College. First game starts at noon.
