Oviedo earns national qualifier; Valenzuela, Bruno and Siml set PRs at Triton Invitational

The Pima Community College men's and women's track & field teams competed at the Triton Invitational on Saturday in San Diego, CA.

  • Sophomore Luis Oviedo (Rio Rico HS) set a national qualifier in the 3,000 meter steeplechase as he finished with a time of 9 minutes, 52.26 seconds. The Aztecs have set 12 national qualifying marks during the outdoor season.
  • Sophomore Tyler Valenzuela (Canyon del Oro HS) took first place in the open pole vault event as he set a new personal-record with a vault of 15-feet, 3-inches. His mark puts him No. 4 in the country. His previous national qualifying vault was 14-feet, 7.25-inches.
  • In women's competition, sophomore Katherine Bruno (Canyon del Oro HS) took second place in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 18:03.33. She set a new personal-best and knocked off over 40 seconds from her previous time of 18:45.12.
  • Freshman Mary Siml set a new personal-best in the 1,500-meter race as she finished with a time of 4:54.01. Her previous national qualifying time was 4:59.27.

The Aztecs will compete in the NJCAA Region I Championships on Tuesday, Apr. 30 and Thursday, May 2 at Mesa Community College. Events begin at 5:00 p.m. on both days.
