Lina Kassimatis has 10 kills but Aztecs Volleyball falls in straight sets to No. 4 Scottsdale CC

The Pima Community College volleyball team (5-14, 2-7 in ACCAC) faced a tough test on Friday as it attempted to hand Scottsdale Community College (12-0, 9-0) its first blemish of the season.

  • The Aztecs fell in straight sets to the No. 4 ranked Artichokes 25-16, 25-15, 25-19. The Aztecs have lost five of their six matches.
  • The Aztecs trailed the entire first set. Sophomore Jessica Bright-Schade (Safford HS) had two straight kills and fellow sophomore Lina Kassimatis had an ace to cut the deficit to 10-8. Later on sophomore Isabel Hansen (Rincon HS) had a kill as Pima trailed 15-10 at that point but they couldn't close the gap.
  • In the second set, the Aztecs took an early lead thanks to sophomore Isabella Jacome's ace and a pair of kills from Kassimatis. The Aztecs matched their biggest lead at three points at 9-6 after Kassimatis had another kill. The Artichokes went on to score 16 of the next 18 points to put the Aztecs behind by double digits.
  • With the score tied at 8-8 in the third set, the Aztecs gave up eight of the next nine points and fell behind 16-9. They cut the deficit to four points on a couple of occasions with Kassimatis' block-point, a kill by sophomore Madi Wilson (Tanque Verde HS) and a kill from Kassimatis but the Aztecs couldn't get any closer.
  • Kassimatis led the Aztecs with 10 kills while Bright-Schade had six kills and eight digs. Hansen finished with five kills and two blocks and sophomore Haley Duncan (Walden Grove HS) had four kills and five blocks.
  • Sophomore Isabella Jacome posted her sixth double-double of the season as she finished the match with 27 assists and 10 digs to go along with two aces. Freshman Morgan Hains (Canyon del Oro HS) closed it out with 16 digs.

The Aztecs will be on the road for two matches next week. They will play at Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
